A SPACE FOR CREATION AND COLLABORATION AND COMMUNITY
A few years ago we started Box Cutter, a project which has given the ACT a big shot of hot coffee – we’ve brought huge artists like Route 8 and Mr Ties to underground venues and backyards across the city and given space for local artists and DJs to work together to create amazing vibes and a beautiful community in our beloved city.
However, the backyards and parents garages and bedrooms and the back of your mate’s van that we’ve been using to make this project are dotted across the city, which makes it difficult to collaborate and really allow our creative garden to come to fruition.
When we were young, we like many other early music enthusiasts, lived at home with our parents, and like any household, there were certain restrictions concerning noise and space. The Box Cutter Space is designed to encourage and help young local musicians and producers in progressing their raw creative talent and getting their work out there. To do this we will supply access to a fully-equipped studio, in a central location that will be easily accessible to all Canberrans. The equipment we provide will be both hardware and software, always available for the musicians and producers – think speakers, turntables, shelves for our records and CDJs. It’s also a way to consolidate the equipment and experience already present within the Canberra community
Anyone who comes along will have the benefit of learning from our broad network of established national and international electronic musicians, who will guide you in producing and promoting music, and allowing access to the big beautiful family.
By supporting this project, you will help us provide local artists with the necessary scene and culture to avoid them leaving for other cities. By providing a local space where producers are encouraged to come together to make music locally, we can start bringing people in, rather than sending people across the pond, never to be seen again. When you support Box Cutter, you support a developing Canberra community based on the love of the sound, the love of the fog and the love of the dance.
Supporting this project will assist us in providing our local musicians and producers with a space equipped with professional technology. This allows them to explore their creative talent in our very own city of Canberra! We will put the grant towards establishing a space somewhere centrally located in Canberra, so we don’t have dusty PA systems and mixers sitting in the spare room at your mum’s house, and we have somewhere to make something beautiful that will really add value to Canberra.
This project aims to move young people away from the unhealthy aspects of electronic music culture, and learn to take part in the creative side of music creation. I would like to create a new context where young people can see the music coming together, and fall in love with the idea of developing their talent, and sharing that talent with others. If this project is successful, the next step is running a free showcase event twice a year, where people can come from far and wide to enjoy the music produced in the Box Cutter Space.
Ideally, we would love to collaborate with other existing community programs and frameworks to give a voice and an outlet to young people in need of a supportive and creative music family, where they can learn and develop skills and positive social networks.
