Project Eligibility Update

There comes a time for every online platform to make difficult decisions. For Stir, this is one of those times.

Stir is a platform built on inclusiveness, participation and a democratic approach to supporting creative projects. This means that one of the hardest decisions we will ever have to make is to turn projects down or deem them ineligible for one of our grants.

After careful consideration and discussion with our parent organisation, community members and other key stakeholders, we have made the difficult decision to update our eligibility criteria.

Although there are many platforms and programs that support entrepreneurship in and beyond Canberra, over the past two years we have found that few support entrepreneurship among creative disciplines: the arts, design, science and humanities.

We frequently hear about the importance of STEM in innovation, yet similar discussions regarding the role that creative disciplines play in the economy are lacking. This is unfortunate, given that creative industries have been associated with the development of intellectual property, creation of jobs, increasing social well-being and supporting many of the other service industries present in the national and global economy. Although creatives are frequently adding value to local and international business, they do not receive the same attention, respect or support.

Stir aims to contribute to correcting this situation. It is a platform for people from creative backgrounds to develop business skills, an entrepreneurial mindset, and a positive disposition for sales and earning a living through their talent.

For this purpose, Stir will focus on supporting projects from the creative industries, and in particular the people from creative disciplines that make these projects happen.

This means that for any project to be eligible for a Stir Grant, it must:

a) Belong to one or more of the following creative industries:

Arts: Visual Arts, Literature, Photography, Music, Theatre, Dance, Cinema, Performance Art, etc;
Design: Graphics, Products, Multimedia, Fashion, Games, Architecture, Interiors, etc;
Science: Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science, Ecology, Botany, Zoology, etc;
Humanities: Anthropology, Education, Communications, History, Sociology, Documentary, etc.

b) Execution of the project must be based on the creator’s own skills:

1. The core of the project must be undertaken by the creator and/or team;

2. The Stir grant cannot be used to outsource development of the core of the project;

3. Some non-core components of the project may be funded through the grant.

For example, if your project is a literary work, you and your team must be the people writing it.
You can however use the grant to pay for printing.

We will be incorporating these additional criteria into Stage 1 of our Project Creation Process to avoid any unfortunate situations in the future. Once a project has been published, the Stir Crew will now review it and determine its eligibility. Ineligible projects are still welcome to use our platform for promotion and to receive feedback from the community. We will also do our best to build bridges with other programs better suited to projects that are ineligible for Stir Grants. Everyone is welcome to be a project supporter and help people from creative backgrounds to engage with the local entrepreneurship ecosystem.

These changes will be incorporated in our Terms & Conditions. Each project creator will receive an email to accept these updates.
